Putting Aside the Whip

("What did I just say to myself?")

“Please don’t ‘should’ on yourself!” I told the 35 class members at the recent Pro-Health Self-Hypnosis Training. I showed them the trash-can. Every time someone wrote a self-hypnosis suggestion that was the least bit derogatory, I pointed to designated repository of “shoulds.”

 Shoulda, woulda, coulda – keeps us stuck in the past. The purpose of self-hypnosis is to get out of the rut of old habits and move forward. Over time, with repetition, emotion and imagination (the language of the sub-conscious mind), new positive habits are reinforced.

 Eventually the new habits can become the preferred ones. We can create new neural paths in the brain, which then run automatically. “Neurons that fire together, wire together.” But the focus always needs to be positive in order to become happier and healthier

 “Isn’t there a time to beat up on myself? To whip myself into shape?” one class member asked.

 Apparently this was the only way she had found to motivate herself. Disgust can make us go on the diet. (Shame makes me clean the house before guests!) And fear often makes us buckle down to business under the dead-line.

 “There is a time and place for sincere regrets,” I replied.

“Hopefully we learn from mistakes, get experience and attain wisdom. This is a time-honored path of learning. But continually whipping ourselves can make us feel defeated. To change we need to feel empowered!”

How can we get out of the rut of "shoulda, woulda, coulda" ?

By thinking “And.”

  •  Whenever the old whip comes out, acknowledge what it is trying to teach you. (If you don’t pay attention to internal feedback, then the whip will just keep popping up!)
  • Maybe even say “Thank-you for sharing.” After all, there is no failure, just feed-back. (And throw the whip into the trash can!.)
  •  Then with an “And” clearly state how you want to think, feel or behave differently. This gives your mind a direction. You have a next step. You are no longer stuck or defeated.

And over time this pattern runs itself automatically. The whip may come out at an unconscious level, the whip goes into the trash and your mind goes to the preferred way of being. Happier and healthier. You deserve it. (And it takes practice!)
