Frequent Questions

"The acceptance of hypnosis as a mode of treatment in medicine is increasing. Among the numerous reports, patients treated with hypnosis experienced substantial benefits for many different medical conditions."

                                    -- James H. Stewart, MD
                                   Mayo Clinic Proceedings, April 2005:80(4)

Q. Is Hypnotherapy safe?
A. Yes! The American Medical Association endorsed Hypnotherapy in 1958 as a valid medical therapy.

Q. Can I be hypnotized?
A. Yes, if you want to! All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis. I simply guide you into this relaxed, comfortable, safe state where the positive suggestions you have chosen will take effect. Anyone can be hypnotized because it is natural. You go in and out of hypnosis several times a day already, for example, while daydreaming or watching TV.

Q. What if I don't wake up?
A. That's impossible because you won't be asleep! Hypnosis is simply an altered state of consciousness or trance that is perfectly natural. You go in and out of it all day long - reading, watching TV, falling asleep, etc.

Q. Will you make me quack like a duck?
A. Do you really want to? I can't make you do or say anything in hypnosis that you wouldn't out of Hypnosis. You are in control at all times. I am just your guide.

Q. What is Hypnosis going to feel like?
A. I don't know because I'm not you. You will do it your way. You may be in a light trance, feeling like you are just closing your eyes and listening to my voice. This is a similar feeling to watching TV. You hear everything around you and a few thoughts may drift in and out. That's fine. Or you may go very deep because it feels so safe and comfortable. However you do it, Hypnosis works.

Q. How many sessions do I need?
A. The number of sessions depends on your special needs and your commitment to "home-learning." Audiotapes/CDs and practice tools are also given with each session. These re-inforce the hypnotherapy and help you in the future. In general:

  • Smoking - 2 sessions
  • Fears, Stress, Insomnia - 3 to 5 sessions
  • Weight - 4 sessions
  • Pain - 3 or more sessions
  • Irritable Bowel - 6 sessions
  • Fibromyalgia - 6 sessions

"The difficult we do immediately.
The impossible takes a little longer."

Q. Is this affordable?
A. Yes! By letting go of bad habits you "save" your money, health and happiness. The sessions include FREE audio tapes or CD's. Payment is requested by check or cash at the time of visit.

Q. Does insurance pay for Hypnotherapy?
A. I'm sorry, not at this time. Insurance doesn't pay for many therapies that work. I will provide you with a receipt if needed.

Q. Do I need a medical referral?
A. Not if you are seeing me for weight, smoking, or stress relief. In Florida, however, you do need a referral for medical diagnoses such as pain, insomnia, tinnitus, irritable bowel, and fibromyalgia. It's easy -- just have your physician, therapist, or chiropractor write out a quick prescription. For example: "Hypnotherapy for (your name) for (diagnosis) with Dr. Doner". You can bring it to your session or have it phoned to me. I'm happy to let your health care provider know of your progress.

Q. How does Hypnotherapy work?
A. Your Sub-Conscious Mind is below conscious awareness and control. It is enormous and powerful! It contains all your habits (good and bad), feelings and motivations. It is largely in charge what you do and how you feel.

Your Sub-Conscious Mind can increase or decrease physical perceptions such as pain. It also affects the "automatic nervous system." This changes blood flow, muscle tightness, blood pressure, heart rate, bowel function, stress hormones, blood sugar levels and the immune system.

Hypnosis

Hypnotherapy speaks directly to your sub-conscious mind. With your consent, I guide you into deep relaxation. I then give you suggestions for the positive changes you have chosen.

"To change one's life: start immediately,
do it flamboyantly, no excuses."

                                        -- William James
